In March 2001, Eletawi Addis, Ethiopia’s first and only private daily newspaper, was shut down by its publisher. There was no prior warning, not even a signal.

The paper’s Sports Section editor, Mensur Abdulkeni, recalls how one day the deputy editor- in-chief of the paper unexpectedly told the journalists including him to stop their work. The order came from the owner. Mensur had enough. He decided that his traumatic experiences in the Ethiopian free press had to stop.
